The Vienna Philharmonic performed its annual Summer Night Concert Schönbrunn, an open-air concert with free admission, in the unique ambience of the gardens of Schönbrunn Palace on Thursday, May 14, 2015. Zubin Mehta conducted the Summer Night Concert with Rudolf Buchbinder as soloist.
This year's concert, which also represented the opening concert of the Vienna Festival, was attended by 100,000 visitors.
With this open-air concert in Schönbrunn, the Vienna Philharmonic wishes to provide all Viennese, as well as visitors to the city, with a special musical experience in the impressive setting of Schönbrunn Palace and its beautiful baroque gardens, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site.

Zubin Mehta
Zubin Mehta was born in 1936 in Bombay and received his first musical education under his father’s Mehli Mehta’s guidance who was a noted concert violinist and the founder of the Bombay Symphony Orchestra. In 1954 he left for Vienna, where he eventually entered the conducting program under Hans Swarowsky at the Akademie für Musik. Zubin Mehta won the Liverpool International Conducting Competition in 1958 and was also a prize-winner of the summer academy at Tanglewood. By 1961 he had already conducted the Vienna, Berlin and Israel Philharmonic Orchestras and has recently celebrated 50 years of musical collaboration with all three ensembles.
Rudolf Buchbinder
Rudolf Buchbinder is firmly established as one of the world's foremost pianists and is frequently invited by major orchestras and festivals around the world. His comprehensive repertoire encompasses numerous 20th century compositions.
Rudolf Buchbinder's emphasis lies in his meticulous study of musical sources. He owns 35 complete editions of Beethoven's sonatas and has an extensive collection of autograph scores, first editions and original documents. In addition, he possesses copies of the autograph scores and piano parts of both Brahms concertos.
